The History of the Combe Wood Tower

We do not know much about the history of The Tower at the moment but here is what we do know:

The Tower was built around 1750 as a Folly by a prominent land-owner John Winter to compete with his neighbour, the owner of the - actually more prominent - Willet Tower. It is constructed of red sandstone and rendered.

Initially used as a gamekeepers cottage it was known Combe Wood Lodge or Winter's Tower. It was lived in until the early 20th century. It was apparently derelict from the 1930s until renovated in the late 1980s, where a modern staircase wing was added, and the whole thing was covered in a modern concrete render. In 2006 the concrete render was removed and replaced with a traditional limestone render.
